It's been the house of winter blues here as it seems with most folk in Melbourne, so thought I'd share some frolicking carefree lasses making music. All that story book reading of fables and folky tales has filtered through as inspiration. I'm thinking of printing a range of four prints, might be sweet for a girl's room or for big kids too! What do you think black or white background?

kids drawings are ace
Ivy and I have been having fun this week doing some combined art projects. I've been cutting out or painting shapes and she's been drawing the nifty linework. I did help draw one circle as a snout as she told me it was a pig (wish I hadn't now but I can see more great partnership projects ahead!)

nyc
Nyc was all all that it should be. Great art, busy sidewalks, fire escapes, water tanks, the subway, nyc cops, mexican sailors, neurotic women, crazy scenes, pizza by the slice, tacos, sun, rain and good times. See you next time!

new york new york
It's been crazy town around here, getting designs ready for Surtex plus a film shoot in our house which required my studio and most of the house to be emptied! It's been a lot of late nights and weekends of work but it will all be worth it when we hop on that plane on Wednesday. Here's a sneak peek of some of the designs I've been working on. If you're in New York please come and visit Booth #544 and say hello!

new york
Well it's all systems go in the house of Neryl. I have just decided to be a part of Surtex, a licensing art and design trade show in New York, in mid may....yes MID MAY! It's a massive show, with so much work ahead of me over the next weeks but the best bit is.... I'll be heading over in person! It's been a few years (and drinks) between visits but so excited to visit my fave city again.
I won't be able to post the designs till after the show so I apologise in advance for any tumbleweed action that may lay ahead in my blog posts.

scandale
I found this great blog, My Vintage Avenue with lots of vintage kids book reference plus this beauty. A 1956 advertisement for a French lingerie under garment company, Scandale. I love that there is no women in sight. If only ads were this good now.

kids stuff is ace!
Another birthday for the little one of the house means another excuse to buy ace kids pressies! I've always had a love of vintage kids books and toys and built quite a collection before even considering having kids. The illustrations are just so great, like this classic Mixies card game from 1956, all intact and unused. There is even a flip movie on the back of the cards. I think I've turned into one of those people that buys presents that they really want for themselves. She better not ruin them...ha! Happy birthday!

happy feet!

Before summer leaves us, I've just designed some thongs (or flip flops as they are called in the states) for a Californian company called Sandalista. You can see all of my designs here. Mix and match the footbed and thong colour to suit too. Happy feet!

jenny craig

An illustration created late last year (with a ridiculously quick deadline) for a Jenny Craig booklet. This was one of five illustrations created by different female artists. Still yet to see the printed product. I'm usually asked to slim girls down so it was one of the few times the client kept requesting, 'make her bigger!'.

victorian name brooches

While I'm on a roll, this is my first ace op shop find of 2012, a sweet Victorian name brooch, Alice. I did some research on this and they were popular in the 1880's to the 1920's. The plainer ones were given to the servants as gifts whilst the more detailed ones were given as sweetheart brooches. There was a strong botanical and Japanese influence during this period which would explain the fan. I'd love to know the history of Alice. Check out these other examples below. Fanny, now there's a name!

put your hands in the air!

It's the new year and I'm finally getting my act together for a post. There are so many things I don't get round to posting and then it goes past a point and I forget. So here's one of my fave finds of the year from my local op shop. A collection of mannequin hands. A pair of closed fists also came in the lot which would make awesome doorknobs or coat hooks. I have a thing for hands and all things hand made. They are the tools of my craft, and lets face it would suck not to have any. So wave em like you just don't care.
